It’s too easy to start doing things that we know will only bring us harm and that we will regret. As long as we feel good, we will continue along our destructive path. If we feel bad, we will take steps to avoid the feelings that are causing us to make mistakes.
Auto-pilot. There is a good example in our life of how people can fall into this trap. My grandmother always loved to cook and was a talented cook. When she wasn’t doing this she was usually knitting and reading. She also loved to bake. She would take her cast iron skillet and turn it into a huge cake and would put it in the oven. I can’t tell you how many times I have been in line at the store when my grandmother would enter and say, “There’s a cake in the oven.” I would enter the store and tell that to my grandmother. She asked me why I was saying this and I said, “Because it’s delicious.
